High Court Stay State Awards

The Karnataka State awards for 2010-2011 were challenged in the High Court by actress, producer and director Priya Hassan. The advocate Pavana Chandra Shetty, who filed the petition for Priya Hasan, was not deterred at not getting a stay. “If the gold medals are given away, the winners will just sell it for value. The government should understand the court’s reasoning in issuing notices and saying that its verdict will be final,” he said.

Priya Hasan has sought for quashing of the awards list citing the presence of cinematographer Ashok Kashyap (he is cameraman of the film) and actress Hema Choudhary in the selection panel. Films of both Kashyap and Choudhary were in the running for awards and Kashyap’s film Super won the best film award — allegedly on his insistence. Again the HC refused a stay, but the government would not risk giving away the awards, or the subsidy, lest the final verdict go against it.
