In a quick chat had with Gurukiran he explains the ups and down in his life. Excerpts of an interview:
Q. Did you expect this big success and journey turning so fruitful?
Guru: Frankly speaking I thought I would be a big flop in life. Hailing from Dakshin Kannada I was very different in attitudes. I thought of pushing our friend V Manohar to the helm. Of course he is a big music director today. Upendra had not given me a chance in ‘A’ things would be have been difficult for me. ‘A’ not only turned ‘A’ class but it gave life for so many people in this Kannada cinema industry.
Q. It was a learning working for you so far?
Guru: This is learning never ends in our life. Music is like ocean. More you excavate you tend to get more. The point of satisfaction also never ends. That is what the great scholars and thinkers have said. I just follow it.
Gurukiran is the darling for the newcomers it is said….
That is true for all the newcomer director I scored music from ‘Majnu’ it clicked and it is rather easy in the first place to work. Secondly they are flooded with enthusiasm. When you look at films like Appu, Ekadanta, Kanti, Rishi, Shubam, Pallakki, Aramane, Sathya in Love, Kempa, Kariya – all the directors are first timers. The music clicked well in the audio industry.
Q. Can you furnish a brief profile of your past?
Guru: I hail from Mangalore. I began my career as a singer in orchestra troupes. I was spotted by actor cum director Upendra for his ‘A’ Kannada film. The music was targeted at youth and it has succeeded enormously. Then again I worked for Upendra with a film bearing his name as title ‘Upendra’. That was once again super hit. From the melody packed ‘Majnu’ an outside Upendra camp I proved that my capacity and proved that music has not come to me by accident. I have acted in small screen as well in big screen. In a Tulu language film ‘Badhukonji Kabithe’ I was the hero. I played prominent roles in ‘Channappa Channegowda’, ‘Swalpa Adjust Madkolli’ Kannada films. In television serials like Putta Putti, Thirugubana, Kathavyakthi, Kalikarna, Gandahendthi, Kannadiyolagina Gantu (also directed music) are some of the well known ones among 20 TV serials.
I have given more than 1500 shows traveling various countries in my career of 13 films.
Q. What do you believe in life?
Guru: For everything time should come. But at any cost hard work and what the people want should be kept in mind. For the first song I composed Sum Sumne Nagthale……, Upendra accepted the tune in one take. There was a celebration after this tune was accepted. It is because it is highly difficult to convince him. I remembered that day again at ‘Arakshaka’ my 75th film. Incidentally Upendra appreciated my work again.
You had good hits in the first six years…
I have given 25 hits out of 30 films from 1998. I have worked as music director for artistes like Vishnuvardhana, Upendra, Ramesh, Puneeth Rajkumar, Sudeep, Darshan etc.
Q. What about the next six years?
Guru: My ‘A’ and ‘Upendra’ Kannada films record was broken by ‘Jogi’. I worked for lot of new directors in Kannada cinema went to Telugu film music. Aptha Mithra, Aptha Rakshaka changed the whole graph of my career.
Q. What is the contribution of music to the success of films?
Guru: Music is good in a film it can push up the film by 60 percent. It is only when all the tunes are well balanced. In my case the failed films made good business in the audio.
Q. You are a good rider in the music department. What about this raid on your house?
Guru: That is an interesting story to tell you. The income tax sleuths thinking that I am making booty in Telugu and Tamil films came rushing. They were told the facts that music director name is there in other language dubbed films but payment is not given to it. I hope they will not raid any other music director house in future. They had seen enough of facts from my house.
Q. Is it because of the new house you have built?
Guru: The house I built on a challenge to my earlier house owner. I was really teased by the lady of rented house. I took it as a challenge and built the house and moved recently.
Q. What else in the pipeline?
Guru: I have great expectations for Bharani Minerals ‘Lakshmi’ starring Shivarajkumar and Priyamani. There is Shiva and Villain complete in work.

As the title indicates again and again the protagonist Sunny (Tarun Chandra) remembers his lover Kanchana (Akila Kishor) after destiny playing villain in the life. There is Spoorthi (Mrudula Seth) daughter of a doctor living with her aunt.
