Ramya is not doing an item number - Kavitha Lankesh

On the small misunderstanding erupted at the announcement of Kavitha Lankesh and producer Ravikumar on behalf of Confident Group a few weeks back that Ramya is appearing in dance and song in ‘Crazy Loka’ the actress has raised objections for bringing it to media even before the signing of agreement.

Ramya has specifically said she is not in an item song and there is no need for accept such songs. This has reached the director Kavitha Lankesh.

In a letter to media Kavitha Lankesh has clarified. What is it? Take a look – Kavitha Lankesh writes:

First of all I hate the term ‘item’ number! As a film maker and that too as a woman film maker I would never have an ‘item’ number in any of my films. Any song and dance in an Indian film is primarily for entertainment and rarely do songs are part of a narrative. But all my songs are a part of the narrative and carry forward the story.

As a film maker who has won many awards I have some social responsibility as well as sensibility in all my films. Secondly, I haven’t had any item numbers as such in any of my films. In fact when Bhavana who was also an important character did a song called ‘Kabbina Jalle ‘ in my film Preethi, Prema, Pranaya people saw the stills and thought it was an item number. But when they saw the films in its entirety they realized it carried the film forward and represented the physical relationship of a couple. Item number are popular for unnecessary skin show and people who have watched my film know that I don’t have to resort to that. Neither Ramya needs to expose and do an item number for my film nor do I need Ramya to do that for my film which is basically a family oriented comedy.

I have requested Ramya to do a special song in my film. Actually it is such a cute and peppy number that my seven year old daughter and her friends know it by heart! Ramya is a good friend of mine ever since Tananam Tananam which won her first ever award; a filmfare award. Knowing Ramya and her body of work it is not appropriate to call it an item number. I have cast someone as senior as Anant Nag and Bharathi vishnuvardhan as hero and heroine of my film when they were just doing someone’s father or uncle and mother and aunt roles respectively. I have cast Anu Prabhakar as a college going girl after she was married and people loved her in it. And what is wrong in bringing in a popular actor to a song when actors in Bollywood or vying with each other to do it? If Ramya does do my song it is an added attraction for my film. But if she does not wish to do so I understand simply because the media might brand her as an item girl. Though, I highly doubt that to happen because according to me she is one of the few female actors in this male dominated industry who can call the shot. Anyway will Ramya do my song or not will be known shortly and I will be happy if she does it, if not someone else will be announced soon.
