Devadas Kannada Movie Review

STORY: This is not the often told ‘Devadas’ story on the Indian screen. It is about the true love of course the affluence corrupting the mind is dealt by the director.

Devadas (Yogish) born in a tent while his mother is about to watch ‘Devadas’ cinema is leading a poor life in the beginning of his life working as extra artist in the tinsel town. He rises from ordinary extra artist to stardom. Before that he is in love with Parvathi (Janal Pandey). Devadas reaching to stardom does not give up his love for Parvathi but his father seeing affluence in life from his son gets corrupted. Showing the aristocracy of his son to Parvathi and his father he gets rid of them for a high class match to his son. That does not work out once Devadas comes to know about the fishy mind of his father.

ANALYSIS: Director ABCD Shanthakumar in this simple story made a very attractive screenplay that focus lot of attention on the ingredients of a commercial cinema.

Matching the scenes perfectly to suit the image of Yogish in the box office director Shanthakumar has made a good homework in the screenplay. He makes the fans of Yogish to go in jeer very often. In that way the senior production manager in Kannada cinema Shanthakumar looking at the needs of the commercial platform of a cinema has won.

The drawback of this film is that the discerning film audience could easily guess the outcome in the end. With a title like ‘Devadas’, director Shanthakumar has not made completely ‘Parvathi and Chandramukhi’ saga. He does not make the hero go drunk always. It is only when Devadas finds Parvathi is withdrawing away he goes on drinking.

The cinema inside the cinema – making the protagonist a hero in the film director Shanthakumar gives a punch. Otherwise it is a routine love story in ‘Devadas’.

PERFORMANCE: This is a complete Yogish film. In frame to frame he wins from his casual style and convincing dialogue delivery. The different costumes, excellent dance and a few fights for Yogish in this film is well received by the fans.

In the song El Bul Bul…(that reminds rebel star Ambarish first film as a villain ‘Nagarahavu’) and Saarayi Sesheyali….gives very good kicking moment for the fans of Yogish.

Nathanya looks more attractive than Janal Pandey. There is some substance of commercial formula in Nathanya. Janal Pandey looks always as if she has got from sound sleep.

Rangayana Raghu is screen stealer from his dialogues as father of Yogish. Pramila Joshai and Ramesh Bhat have also given their best in ‘Devadas’.

TECHNICALITY: The cinematography from Renukumar especially the top angles and the beginning of the film in black and white deserves appreciation.

Joshua Sridhar has given two peppy tunes in that Nim Pappan Gantu Ellu Hogalla….is a fast beat with a unique voice. Saiyare Saiya…is convincing. The yesteryears song picked for this film Saarayi Seesheyalli…..(scored by music director and comedy actor Sadhu Kokila for ‘Mangalya Saakshi’ Kannada film) gathers good attention among all the songs.

LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST: Boozing in life is as bad as excess dozing in life!
